ĀKAU had organised a taxi to pick me up from the airport and take me to this event. I was so nervous when we pulled up outside the hotel, I just sat there staring at this huge building. Everybody seemed smartly dressed in their suits and blazers, I guess I'm the only one wearing a hoody. When I was finally ready to get out a man came and opened my door, Ha! that's amazing I thought. It’s a very nice building but the seminar had not quite started and I ended up waiting in a restaurant downstairs. Eventually, the event did start and I was able to go in and sit right up front, VIP, whoop whoop thanks ĀKAU it was amazing.
Jake Millar opened up by introducing himself and talking a little bit about himself. Jake Millar is the Co-Founder and CEO of Unfiltered, Jake is a 21-year-old new-media and education entrepreneur based in New York City. Jake was really cool (he did his first skydive at the age of five!). When he was 18 years old he turned down a law scholarship worth $40,000, sold his car and founded OOMPHER, his first startup. Less than a year later he sold it to the NZ Government.
Something he said about goals I found really Interesting “Aim for the stars land on the moon it’s still pretty cool” I enjoyed listening to some of the things he said.
Following Jakes introduction, he then introduces the Unfiltered speakers who are giving how-to advice (usually worth thousands!) on how to grow your business both here in New Zealand, and globally. Unfiltered publishes exclusive video interviews with New Zealand's most successful entrepreneurs, investors and executives, digging deep into how they did it… and how others can too.
One of my favourite speakers was Glenn Martin, who is the inventor and entrepreneur behind the Martin Jetpack, a 30+ year project that produced the world’s first practical jetpack! 30 years and he stuck to it to make his jetpack fly for only a few minutes, Glenn calls it “30 years in 30 minutes!”. When flying his jetpack at an event he received a message from Neal Armstrong saying “ Love what you're doing, congratulations.” Glenn Martin had caught my attention with his jetpack and powerful straight forward speaking. Annette Presley another speaker that I also loved listening to is the co-founder of Callplus Group. The woman was a powerhouse who was ambitious and had style, Annette looked fierce up there while speaking. A few more of my favourite speakers were AJ Hackett founder of AJ Hackett (bungy jumping), Peter Beck the founder and CEO of Rocket Lab and Richard Bell investor and Chairman of Unfiltered Media, and the Founder of management consulting firm, Business Leaderz Group.
Unfiltered was outstanding, I really enjoyed hearing all the speakers I couldn’t wait to tell everybody about it. I ended up returning back home to Kaikohe excited, inspired and exhausted (in a good way) with a new book full of valuable notes and pointers from the day’s events.
