Tuesday mornings couldn't be better in Kaikohe. Start with a block of wood, I chose a rectangular piece of Kauri from the pile, a selection of beautifully aged wood working tools, some I'm told belonged to a late local master carver and finally a very very patient instructor, Tony Makiha. After deciding what to carve, this in itself a huge feat, due to my resistance to curves, Tony gave me a lesson on how to read the grain of the timber. Reading the grain, a skill I'm yet to master is key to carving, read it wrong and the timber chips and splinters. A few hours later, with much guidance from Tony, and after using many shaped tools and mallets I have made a pretty good start on my first carved work! Tony has been carving for 20 years and runs numerous classes around Northland while also working on his own work. Check him out here www.facebook.com/MystixStudio
