WEEK 14!

11/3/2015

It's been far too long since our last ĀKAU blog. We could blame the beautiful Northland sunshine for distracting us, or the Rugby World Cup for tying us to our TV's. While that wouldn't be a lie, it's mostly because we've been heads down with our incredible rangatahi producing some great mahi.

It's been a pretty exciting time since our last blog.
We've presented our Miria Marae Design to the client. You can read a bit about Honey's experience here. Another concept presentation to go on the 14 November to the whole marae at their AGM. We're looking forward to it!

We have also had a wee bit of media attention with our Paddle Stool gracing the pages of NZ House & Garden. Ana featured in online blog One To Watch, Jeremy Rose from Radio NZ spent a day with ĀKAU and interviewed the youth designers on site at Miria Marae. We'll let you know when that goes to air. Architecture NZ Editor, Justine Harvey, & photographer Jonny Davis also spent a day with ĀKAU, watch for a spread in their Feb edition. And on top of all that we had Jayden representing ĀKAU in the Northern Advocate.

We ran a workshop over the school holidays called Wāhine Taonga. Women came with members of their whānau to talk about health, safety and what it means to them. We translated these ideas into patterns and made beautiful screen printed fabrics from it. A few sneak peeks below, but we're holding the final images secret until the big reveal early 2016.
A big thanks to THOON,  Hemptech, Amy Pyle & Caren Davis for making such an epic time.
ĀKAU has also been to a workshop run by Jasmax, an incredible design firm based in Parnell. At the workshop we learnt a lot about design and then we watched Ever the Land. It's an amazing film and so apt considering we're in the process of designing a marae. Since meeting Jasmax our youth designers have organised a Hikoi to Auckland. We're going to look at some design based universities, art galleries and visit Jasmax HQ and Material Creative. We're pretty excited about this! We're going to sneak an icecream at Mission Bay in there too. Yeah.

As you can see we've been keeping out of trouble here at ĀKAU and we're excited about what's happening next to keep us entertained. A few things up our sleeve but we promise to be a little more devout on the blog posts from here on in to keep you up to date!

Ngā mihi nui!
