ARCO Pop-up! has been a hive of activity leading up to christmas with a team of local rangatahi designing an outdoor community space due to be built in the new year. This empty vacant lot of land was once the premises for the infamous Kaikohe Hotel (frequented by the Queen herself in it's heyday!) but has sat abandoned and unused since its removal.
The youth design team have done an amazing job analysing how the space will be used and by whom. They have developed a design based around the maori myth, Tane and the 3 kete of knowledge, and helped draw up plans, sections and elevations! As a team they have investigated possible construction materials and began budgets based on these. Next step will be finalising the design early January with the community build happening January 19th to 23rd, 2015. We cannot wait to see their amazing ideas turned into reality. If you can use a hammer, have some epic building skills, bit of a picasso with a paintbrush or consider yourself a guru gardener we would love if you could get on board for the community build of this project. Watch this space!
